FOLLOWS THE ON-AND-OFF STAGE ANTICS OF A TOURING THEATRICAL COMPANY AS THEY FUMBLE FROM DRESS REHEARSAL TO THE DISASTROUS FINAL PERFORMANCE OF A SEX COMEDY CALLED NOTHING ON.  EVERYTHING THAT CAN GO WRONG DOES GO WRONG.  THE CAST DESPERATELY TRIES TO HANG ONTO THEIR LINES, THEIR PERFORMANCES, AND THE FURNITURE AS THEIR FARCICAL ANTICS SPIRAL INTO HILARIOUS CHAOS.   THIS OUTRAGEOUS COMEDY WILL GIVE YOU A NIGHT OF UNCONTROLLABLE LAUGHTER.

REVIEW

Go behind sets with the Gallery
But watch out for those flying innuendoes
by Tom Dillon, Times-News

First, a disclaimer that Burlington's Gallery Players are nothing like the haphazard acting troupe they portray in "Noises Off," the farce within a farce that they'll perform for two weekends starting tonight at the Paramount Theater here.

You have to be really good to portray actors who are really bad, and that's what audiences get here.

It's true that everyone in theater has endured his share of lost contact lenses, bloody noses, damaged egos and unfortunate office romances all arising at the wrong time and threatening to bust up the whole performance.

But British writer Michael Frayn's effort takes those kinds of situations far beyond what any actor might have come to expect.  The result is a play so ridiculous that it's hilarious.  Real director Jamie Lawson's crew do a bang-up job with it, though you may leave the theater wondering where you are and what you name is.

The play follows the actors of the Old Town Troupe as they attempt to enact a sex and romantic comedy called "Nothing On."  You'll get to see a rehearsal for act one, then act one from behind the scenery and then act one again.  Now, can you see why this is confusing?

The cast is led by Gallery veteran Jane McLelland as the actor named Dotty and the character named Mrs. Clackett.  Her timing is impeccable.

She's ably assisted by Parry Wilvers as the dictatorial director, Michael Ferguson as the pretend stage manager and actors Tim Brown, Amy Pierce, Lynne Patterson, Neil Shepherd, Kelly Wallace and Ken Ashford.

But a special round of plaudits should go to the technical crew, led by set designer Randy Phillips, who created the two-level reversible set.  The whole thing gets reversed between acts to allow audiences to see the play as well as the behind scenes activity.  It's ingenious.

That was why the technical crew got a rare chance to take a bow during Thursday night's final dress rehearsal before a small audience at the theater.  They deserved the chance.

The name "Noises Off" comes from theater jargon for offstage commotion that the audience isn't supposed to hear.  It's quite appropriate, and the result is a delightful, if zany adult comedy.  It's not for children, but adults - particularly those who have any experience at all in the theater - may see some things they recognize in this two-and-one-half hour farce.
